Independence
We offer a wide range of high-performance mixtures using UK recommended varieties. Not only are varieties chosen by comparison across Welsh/English and Scottish recommended lists, but we also work with suppliers to assess performance data from independent farm trials.
Our selection process benefits from the analysis derived from selective grazing trials on a typical upland farm in the Scottish Borders which is very similar if not slightly more challenging than our home climate in Wales. The trials conducted include seasonal growth / quality measur
measurements, winter hardiness and clean out scores derived from animal grazing preferences. This data compliments the national recommended list data.
All the varieties we stock are listed on either/both of the following: Recommended Grass and Clover Lists for England and Wales, SRUC Grass and Clover Varieties for Scotland. Being a truly independent merchant gives us the freedom to choose varieties based on merit and not market/breeder pressure.
Seed Quality
Using the best varieties is only part of the story. The benefits of sowing the correct varieties can be negated by sowing poor quality seed. Our seed lots endure a meticulous selection process and are maintained to ensure that only seed lots of the highest germination, purity and vigour are used in our mixtures.
Selection
We review recommended lists and trials for new varieties which offer improvements in (amongst other traits) yield, DM, ME and disease resistance, however, we do not change varieties based on recommended lists and trials alone; e.g., a variety consistently performing well in our region may be favoured for reliability over a few percentage points of yield. When we do make changes, we introduce them gradually and monitor on farm performance to assess the real-world strengths and weaknesses of each variety.
Sustainability
Helping you grow a sustainable farming business is a top priority and ensuring your business is both economically and environmentally sustainable is as important to us and it is to you. We select high performance varieties which increases nitrogen use efficiency and increase yields on farm reducing CO2/ac. We also select varieties with robust agronomic properties to reduces losses and pesticide inputs.
